Mass Effect: Cortex Plus

Redemption Revealed

While hanging out at the Afterlife, Xavier Lewis is contacted by an old associate, Miranda Lawson, to assist her in retrieving the body of a certain deceased Alliance hero. Due to working with Xavier in the past and the team’s recent clash with the Blue Suns who have the person in question she figured they would be interested.

Unfortunately the team arrives moments too late to prevent the Blue Suns from handing the stasis pod over to the Shadow Broker’s agent. They dispatch the mercenaries without too much trouble but encounter someone else looking for the body, Dr. Liara T’Soni. After some discussion, Miranda and her employer agrees to help Liara.

However the Blue Suns are now hot on the trail as Liara makes a run to the Mass Relay, which leads the team into a heated space battle gunning down Blue Sun fighters. With the exception of one wily old ace the fighters are easily dispatched, with the ace falling to the combined firepower of the team’s corvette and Miranda’s cutter.

Welcome to Omega

The group arrives on Omega, where it turns out Myrraeme Kinesia is in hot water with an old flame, Aria. After some quick talking they are able to arrange a deal: locate a missing artist that Aria had hired in exchange for their skins. After tracking down a number of unsavory characters they finally find the him imprisoned by the Blue Suns and about to be sold off into slavery.

One clever plan later Xavier Lewis has managed to gain control of the BLue Sun’s computer system after planting a virus then showing up as the tech support guy (watching all those episodes of Leverage are paying off for that player!) and he has control of their YMIR mechs just in time for the team to infiltrate the base and rescue the prisoners.

Just then the Collectors show up to claim their merchandise, and the team beats a hasty retreat leaving the YMIRs to deal with the Collectors. Aria is happy, and the team gained much needed funds to upgrade their gear.

Treasure Planet

Tobias gets a call from Astrid, the sister of his deceased girlfriend Heidi. It turns out Heidi had placed a claim on an asteroid right before her death, along with a message claiming she had “struck it rich.” In an ezeo rich system like Caleston that usually means only one thing. However, Eldfell-Ashland Energy (EAE) has been using the Blood Pack to intimidate independent miners out of their claims. The EAE agent, a volus named Lamdu Nam tries to buy her claim but Tobias and the group smell a rat.

The group, plus Astrid and an old buddy of Tobias with a transport ship head out to the asteroid, only to get jumped by Blood Pack vorcha! The group makes plenty of trouble using the various dangerous tools on the mining rig, but after the Krogan capture their friends they are forced to surrender and are take to the EAE processing station.

Lamdu is furious, EAE checked the asteroid and found nothing, so where was Heidi hiding her treasure? He throws them in the brig hoping to break their spirits. However, Tobias left his combat drone behind (powered down to appear broken) which then breaks them out and brings the one weapon it could carry, Heidi’s ancient chemical propelled slug thrower that was hidden in her spacer pack.

The group is surprised to find that instead of a Colt .45 there is an alien handgun of unknown origins that melts metal like hot butter. They then wreak havoc on the station before grabbing Lamdu and taking a shuttle straight to the authorities. Unfortunately the wily volus expected this and called the cops first, reporting the damage to the station as a terrorist act. While the EAE lawyers get him out on bail, the group is in hot water despite Tobia’s personal relationship with the police captain.

After some investigations at the claims office, they find the answer, a rogue comet passed close to Heidi’s asteroid right before she went missing. With the police captain in tow, the team intercepts the comet and finds an alien device probably worth a fortune. It appears that the asteroid belt in Caleston was once the homeworld of a spacefaring race!

But Lamdu is still one step ahead, jumping out the the storage compartment! The group is able to take him down without getting shot, just as the Huntress appears. It seems the Blood Pack had a ship heading to their location, but they won’t be able to make it with their engines shot out. EAE throws Lamdu under the bus rather than risk being sued, and Tobias wrings a confession out of him for creating the “accident” that claimed Heidi’s life, bringing some closure to her family.

The Clinic Job
Mass Effect meets Leverage

Tracking down the Lystheni agents led to a plastic surgery/spa/medical clinic on Illium for the rich and famous. With the help of a Spectre, the team decided to infiltrate the place, with Ronin pretending to be a hot new music star in treatment, the rest of the team creating cover stories as his entourage.

Everything was going well until they ran into an old enemy. Jack Haliat, a pirate that the team had fought before was at the clinic after getting more illegal cybernetic mods and a new face after the team had wiped out his base. Not knowing who he was the team confronted him, leading to a shootout at the clinic followed by a high speed chase through rush hour traffic.

Between Tobias’ insane driving skills and Ronin doing some crazy stunts with his biotic charge they managed to capture Jack and some of his gang. Interrogations afterward added more clues to the Lystheni plot, with Asharia and D’artin choosing to go undercover in order to hunt the agents and protect the rest of the team from the price on D’artin’s head.

The chase at the end of the session reminded me of this video:

Email for D'artin Telav

From: Captain Kirrahe

It was a pleasure seeing you again, even if the circumstances were less than ideal. The information you recovered has disturbing implications to say the least. I have forwarded the data on to a trusted friend, a Spectre named Jondum Bau. Hopefully together you can get to the bottom of this.

Hold the line,

Cloak and Daggers

D’artin received an urgent message from his homework of Sur’Kesh; a rogue STG team led by an agent known as “Kraten the Brute” had been spotted on Caleston and the team was given orders to take them down. D’artin was given a secret mission to destroy certain data that this rogue group carried as well.

After doing some investigative legwork they found a data crystal, which caused a good deal of argument when D’artin destroyed it before anyone else could check the contents! However they still managed to locate the STG team and talk to them before opening fire. It turned out the data showed that the Lystheni have infiltrated the Salarian government…

Shore Leave

The Huntress docked on Caleston in order to repair the damage done from the pirate attack from the previous session. While Tobias Askvig stays behind to direct the repairs, the rest of the team is granted a 48 hour pass.

Promptly heading to the nearest bar, the team encounters a miner named Lee who asks them to check on some friends that have gone missing. Asharia T’Saeri tries to hustle the locals, only to be find herself on the receiving end of a con! A bar brawl is quickly broken up by the local authorities, and they decide to leave town and check on the mine instead.

After contacting Tobias and fighting some feral Varren the team discovers that the miners ran across an alien artifact that dates back over one million years ago, but the device begins affecting their minds as it has turned the miners into mindless creatures. The group decides to detonate explosives burying the device and place a quarantine on the mine.

Tobias muses that there might be other similar artifacts somewhere out in the galaxy…

Batarians sue Citadel Council

A batarian group has apparently decided to sue the Citadel Council. They claim that the crackdown on the galactic slave trade is a violation of their culture. The lawsuit claims that slaves are a crucial part of the batarian caste society. It is unknown if the suit will affect the upcoming peace treaty negotiations between the Council and Khar’shan.

Special Ops team removes pirate threat

Thanks to a Citadel Special Forces team, a gang of pirates operating out the the Armstrong Nebula has been removed. While details of the operation remain classified, Fleet Admiral Anderson revealed that the team was successfully able to disrupt the pirates operations and track them back to their base, eliminating several privateer vessels.

“This is exactly the kind of mission these teams were created for.” said Councilor Donnel Udina. “While we need to focus on rebuilding the fleet, you can rest assured that we consider the safety of all our citizens of the utmost importance.”

The Council had ordered the creation of a number of special teams to patrol the Attican Traverse earlier this month in response to complains that several fleets formerly stationed in the Traverse had been reassigned to the Citadel following the Geth sneak attack.
